Sisters Mary & Theresa Guilfoyle c.1939
Theresa Mary Guilfoyle (Right).
The location is 14 Nursery Street,Manchester.
It was Bill Rush who introduced Ursula Haslam to Patrick Johnstone.
He had met Patrick by chance in front of a statue of the blessed virgin in St Mary's RC church (The hidden gem) Mulberry Street, Manchester.
They then went for a beer to the Sawyer's Arms public house on Deansgate after which he took Patrick home to meet Ursula, his niece.
more to follow!
Both the church and the pub are still there!

Henry Haslam - Order for interment 07 Feb 1903.
He is buried in a public grave at Peel Green cemetery, Salford. These graves were paid for by charitable contributions.
The grave is unmarked and he shares it with about ten strangers.
This document is in a very fragile state. It has been over-written by his daughter Ursula at some point. (She did that with everything!)
The reference to Ellie 4620 is Henry and Theresa's daughter who died aged 3 years in 1897. There is a small marker on that grave. It bears only the grave reference number.
(In 2002, £0 13s 0d from 1903 was worth £42.68 or $74.11 (US)
using the retail price index).

1930. St James' RC Infant school, Ellor Street, Pendleton, Salford.
Bernard Johnstone recently told me that he and Peter had left St James' Salford and moved to St Mary's Swinton for a short while. They had an awful time at St Mary's. They were bullied by the pupils and teachers alike.
He recalled one teacher saying to them ''Don't come here with your Salford ways!'' Both Peter and Bernard were delighted when they later returned to St James.

Thomas Aloysius Guilfoyle Jones born c.1881
Thomas Aloysius Guilfoyle Jones (seated).
Colchester 1906.
Thomas Aloysius Guilfoyle Jones. Born c.1881 Manchester.
He was the first born of Theresa Guilfoyle and her first husband Thomas Henry Jones. He was the half brother of my grandmother, Ursula Angela Haslam.
Thomas was a career soldier and served with the 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster). He enlisted around 1897 (The battalion was stationed in Manchester in 1897).
He saw action in the South African War 1899-1901 (Boer War) and the First World War.
During the Boer War he took part in the British army's 'scorched earth' policy of farm burning. Farms were evacuated and torched to prevent farmers from providing support for the so-called rebels. The displaced families were massed in concentration camps where many thousands died from disease.
Thomas Aloysius Guilfoyle Jones born c.1881
His tunic is part of his 'hot weather review order'. The Lion of England' badge of the King's Royal Regiment can be seen on his collar and he is wearing his Boer War medals. Ursula adored Tom, her big brother. She was about seven years younger than him.

(possibly to an earlier wife) his other children were: Ann (Annie) 1846, Catherine (Kate) 1848 were both born in Dublin.
Thomas and his family moved to Manchester, England where his daughter Ellen was born 1850. His daughters Mary (Polly) 1854, Theresa 1858, and Elizabeth 1860 were all born in Manchester.
